It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This is the time of year that we all look forward to in one way or another. Some of us like winding down the year relaxing and taking time off, and some of us like the hustle and bustle of party planning, gift giving and gathering with all of our loved ones.
The winter season is upon us and no matter where you live, we can all really feel the changes in the air. This is also a great time to plan more inner and outer work, more self-care, and snuggle more closely to our spiritual or religious beliefs. There are so many festivities to enjoy even if you don’t belong to any one religious belief.
In keeping with our practices from the Autumn Equinox, let’s ask ourselves this question:
Practicing self-care during the Winter Solstice and the holiday season is essential to maintain physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Here are some ways to practice self-care during this special time of year.
Inner & Outer World Self-Care Practices
Embrace the Danish concept of "hygge," which involves creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Light candles, snuggle up with a warm blanket, and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or tea while reading a good book or watching your favorite movies.
Despite the colder weather, spending time outdoors can be rejuvenating. Take nature walks in a winter wonderland, go ice skating, or simply appreciate the beauty of the season.
Enjoy nourishing, warming foods. Cook hearty soups, stews, and comfort foods. It's also essential to maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated, as the holiday season often comes with indulgent treats.
Continue to prioritize physical activity even during the colder months. Try indoor workouts, yoga, or dance to keep your body and mind active and healthy.
Spend quality time with family and friends. Share stories, play games, and create meaningful memories together.
Incorporate mindfulness and meditation into your routine. This can help reduce stress and keep you centered during a potentially hectic time.
Don't overcommit to holiday events and parties. Learn to say no when needed to avoid burnout and prioritize your own well-being.
Use the Winter Solstice as an opportunity for introspection. Reflect on the past year, what you've achieved, and what you hope to accomplish in the year ahead. Set positive intentions for the future.
Consider volunteering or finding ways to give back to your community. Helping others can be a fulfilling way to connect with the spirit of the season.
Whether you follow a specific religious or spiritual tradition or not, take time to celebrate and connect with your beliefs. This can involve attending religious services, meditating, or engaging in personal rituals that hold meaning for you.
